THE MYTH BEHIND INTERNSHIP

Internship is a position a student or a trainee holds in an organization majorly for the purpose of gaining industrial experience or to meet-up the requirements of his qualification. It provides a professional learning experience for the students which helps them to boost their careers as the work they do is more practical and meaningful. The students undergoing the training are called interns. The main features of an internship are that it is a short-term work experience. It may or may not be paid tenure. On good performance there are chances that the company might retain the intern as an employee and provide with professional benefits and income. As it is an experiential learning integrated with the theoretical knowledge gained by the student in his/her education, the student gets to learn practical implementation and it helps in skills development which will help the student in professional settings.

However recently internship has become more of a free labour program than skill development. It has become a trend where in the companies lure the trainees in the name of internship programs, they emphasize on the fact that as the intern has no practical experience so it, they who are providing them with training and helping them to excel professionally. This has created distrust among trainees as sometimes even after putting in a lot of hard work and working full time for the company, the trainees are not rewarded appropriately. Hence it is very important for the companies to set clear guidelines as to how the program will be executed and the trainees should not be made any false promise as this will only create a situation of chaos and unrest among the trainees.

Are internship programs really useless?

No, internships are the best way for professional growth and it is also a two-way process. When companies will give you something whether money or the knowledge, they will ask for something in return. Internship makes a lot of difference to give a head start to your career as usually good companies would prefer people who are trained. Also, sometimes internship programs do open into good placement avenues as you make a lot of contact at your workplace. The programs prepare the students for the work pressure which is usually not taught at the schools. Interns do add value to the company as they bring in fresh and new perspective.

So, what to do?

The interns should carefully research on the company they are planning to intern with. They should clear all the terms and conditions beforehand to avoid any confusion at later point of time. Also, trainees should understand that it is more about good training and good exposure rather than money. It is important to get as much information about the internship as possible beforehand.

Needless to say, that the kind of learning you have from practical experience is no match to what you learn in classrooms. Although a lot of companies advertise their internship programs and may misuse the work done by the interns and not provide enough credit, it becomes the responsibility of the interns to do proper research. Needless to say, the environment experience, job responsibilities and experience of real work are a great add-on to the resume but, you have to make sure to act wise.
