The 2022 Asian Games, held in Hangzhou, China, marked a significant milestone by introducing esports as a medal event for the first time. Seven esports games were officially included in the competition: Arena of Valor Asian Games Version, Dota 2, Dream Three Kingdoms 2, FIFA Online 4, League of Legends, Peace Elite Asian Games Version, and Street Fighter V: Champion Edition.
China, as the host nation, clinched the first-ever esports gold medal on September 26th, 2022. The event drew substantial attention from Olympic officials. The Chinese esports team, consisting of five skilled gamers, secured their victory by defeating Malaysia 2-0 in a best-of-three match of the immensely popular smartphone game, Arena of Valor. This thrilling contest lasted 45 minutes and showcased the competitive potential of esports on a global stage.
Arena of Valor, developed by Tencent and known as Honor of Kings in its official Chinese version, is a mobile multiplayer battle game with widespread popularity in Asia. It has been launched in over 30 countries, including India.
Although India did not participate in Arena of Valor, the country made its presence felt in League of Legends, finishing fifth in the competition. Ultimately, South Korea emerged as the victor in the League of Legends category.
This groundbreaking inclusion of esports in the Asian Games demonstrates the growing significance and global recognition of competitive video gaming as a legitimate sport, setting a precedent for future international sporting events.
